What is a Lawn Fertilization Technician?
Many people don’t know what goes into being a fertilization technician. Some companies in our industry allow their fertilization technicians to work with only a registered technician license. What does that mean? In the state of Indiana, anyone applying chemicals to your yard is only required to have an RT license. According to the Indiana State Chemist, this RT license is required on any person who is not certified and licensed but is using chemicals under the off-site supervision of a licensed for hire or not for hire applicator employed by the firm.
The RLM, Inc. team believes that this is not enough for what our clients need or expect. During the winter months, our technicians continue their education and take classes to earn credit points to keep their current certifications with the Indiana State Chemist. What does this mean for you as a client? Simply put, our technicians have made Fertilization their career. Our technicians are educated in using and supervising the use of chemicals and fertilization rather than just operating under the license of the owner of our company. They can detect problems and know how to fix them with confidence.

Why is Lawn Fertilization Important?
Having your lawn fertilized is key to making sure it stays healthy and looks fresh and green. There are many benefits to lawn fertilization treatment, including:
- Replenish essential nutrients: Nutrients are just as crucial to your lawn’s growth as water and sunlight. They help your grass grow and improve its disease resistance. A lawn needs potassium, phosphorous and nitrate to flourish. Soil naturally loses these nutrients over time, resulting in a poor environment for the turf. Fertilizer replenishes these nutrients to improve health and the turfs ability to retain the provided nutrition, providing beautiful, long-lasting results.
- Stronger roots: Fertilizer helps your grass become healthier by strengthening roots and providing growth-boosting nutrients. With regular fertilization, your lawn can achieve optimal health that can’t be accomplished with soil alone.
- Weed and pest control: When lawns are well fertilized, they promote a healthy ecosystem of micro-organisms and lawn-friendly insects like earthworms that feast on unwanted pests. Fertilizer also cultivates thick grass with strong roots to prevent weed growth.
- Soil protection: Fertilizer improves soil health by increasing its water-holding capacity and creating a full lawn that prevents soil runoff.
- Cost-effective: Fertilizer keeps your lawn healthier, reducing the risk of major issues like disease and degradation that require more costly repair services. Fertilizer can also help to improve the look of your lawn, which increases the curb appeal and market value of your home or market value of your business.

Our Fertilizers
We use award-winning fertilizers to achieve the superior results you’re looking for. These premium fertilizers are made from organic, sustainable ingredients for solutions that are safe for you and the environment.
Each fertilizer is formulated to address specific seasonal and geographical factors. The first round of fertilizer we use provides nutrients to jumpstart your lawn’s growth. We follow the initial fertilizer with fertilizers that defend against weeds and pests to keep your grass healthy.
Some of these fertilizers have slow-release capabilities so that your lawn reaps the benefits for months at a time. We also use a special winterizing fertilizer treatment that protects your lawn from the effects of cold weather so that they grow faster in the springtime.
Our Fertilization Treatment
Our rounds contain either a pre-emergent or post-emergent spot treatment or blanket spray. This program only covers broadleaf weeds – it will not remove seeded grasses that begin to grow like weeds. Fungus treatment is not included in this package, but is a program we offer.
We apply the first round of fertilizer to your lawn between March and April, with subsequent treatments done in monthly intervals for a total of six rounds. Our treatment process is as follows:
*Each round of our fertilization treatment is weather permitting
- Round 1: This application has a pre-emergent and helps control grassy and broadleaf weeds. It will provide the necessary nutrients to feed your lawn and help with the green up after the harsh winter months. This application is usually applied in March and into April.
- Round 2: This round contains a pre-emergent which will aid in invasive weeds in your turf including dandelions, crabgrass, and clover. Coupled with Round 1 and the remaining treatments which contain post-emergent weed control will support the overall health of your lawn. This round plays an essential role in carrying elements through the plants circulatory system. This application is usually applied in April into May.
- Round 3: Mid-Season is the time to protect against insects. The Round 3 fertilizer with insecticide consists of a slow-release fertilizer to feed the turf throughout the harsh summer months, as well as an insecticide barrier to protect your lawn from surface and subsurface insects. This application is usually applied in June.
- Round 4: This organic fertilizer will deliver results without excessive growth and makes nutrients more available to plants providing everything the plant needs to maintain color and density. It provides the correct ration of carbon to nitrogen for optimal plant health. This application is usually applied in July into August.
- Round 5: This application provides natural, slow-release organic nutrients that will enrich the soil and turf. By utilizing a high-nutrient product, the turf is provided with recovery after the hot summer months. This application is usually applied in September.
- Round 6: This final application is a winterization treatment for your lawn. This fertilizer will allow the plants to store the necessary carbohydrates to get them through the winter. This product provides everything needed to maintain color and density for an early green up next season. This application is applied in October into November.
** The RLM, Inc. partnership with our clients is incredibly important. Since we are not at your home or business every day, we look to you to let us know if something is not quite right between visits.
