Does My Yard Need Fertilizer? How to Tell

You’ve walked your yard a dozen times. The grass looks a little off: patchy in some spots, yellowing in others, and growing slower than it should. Something is wrong, but you’re not sure what. Fertilizer seems like a logical fix, but is it actually what your yard needs?

Knowing when to fertilize and when not to makes a real difference. The wrong treatment at the wrong time can do more harm than good. At Ricci’s Landscape Management, Inc., we’ve helped homeowners across Northwest Indiana answer that exact question for more than 30 years. We don’t believe in guesswork. We assess what your yard actually needs and build a plan around it.

Your yard may need fertilizer if you notice:

  • Grass growing slower than one inch per week.
  • Yellow or brown patches instead of consistent green color.
  • Weeds taking over areas where grass used to grow.
  • Thinning turf or bare spots that won’t fill in on their own.

Why Is My Grass Growing So Slowly?

Healthy grass typically grows about one inch per week. If your lawn is falling behind that pace, a lack of nutrients is often the reason.

Grass depends on three primary nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen drives above-ground growth and gives grass its green color. Phosphorus supports root development. Potassium helps the plant hold up under stress. When soil runs low on any of these, growth slows, and the lawn starts to look tired.

Soil in Northwest Indiana can vary significantly from one yard to the next, and that variation affects how quickly nutrients are depleted. A soil test is the most reliable way to confirm a deficiency before treating it. Without one, you’re guessing, and fertilizing a lawn that doesn’t need it can scorch turf or cause runoff that harms surrounding plant life.

Does Grass Fertilizer Kill Weeds?

This is one of the most common questions homeowners ask, and the short answer is no. Standard fertilizer feeds your grass: it does not kill weeds.

That said, a well-fed lawn does push back against weeds indirectly. A weak, undernourished lawn cannot establish a sturdy root system, allowing weeds to move in and steal whatever nutrients remain. When you fertilize consistently and correctly, your grass grows thicker and more competitive, leaving less room for weeds to establish themselves.

If weeds are already widespread in your yard, fertilizer alone won’t solve the problem. You may need a separate treatment plan that addresses both weed growth and the lawn’s underlying health. An experienced lawn care team can assess what your yard actually needs before recommending a course of action.

Why Choose Professional Fertilizing Over DIY?

Walk into any home improvement store, and you’ll find a long shelf of fertilizer products: granular, liquid, slow-release, quick-release. Picking the right one for your specific grass type, soil condition, and time of year is harder than it looks.

Professional fertilizing offers a few clear advantages:

  • Proper soil assessment: A professional tests your soil first, so the treatment targets the actual deficiency rather than a best guess.
  • Correct product selection: Different grass types and seasons call for different nutrient ratios. Getting this wrong can damage turf.
  • Accurate application rates: Too much fertilizer burns grass. Too little produces no results. Professionals apply the right amount at the right time.
  • Integrated treatment plans: A professional can combine fertilizing with weed control, grub treatment, or aeration as needed, rather than addressing each issue separately.
